The Other Side of the River

120’ x 8’ x 6”, passenger concourse wall enhancement, corrugated metal panels, stained concrete panels with embedded fiber optics

NJ Transit commission for Hoboken Ferry Terminal, Hoboken, NJ

This artwork pays tribute to the imagination of those who created the Hoboken Terminal Complex, and to those who have passed through it over the years. The layering of materials symbolizes the connection between the terminal’s conception, construction, and current renovation. Angular negative spaces, shaped like the glimpses of the river that are framed by the terminal’s underlying structure, have been cut away from the concourse cladding. Within these openings, aspects of the terminal’s Beaux Art ornamentation, reinterpreted as points of light, are revealed. Silhouettes of passengers from the past, tinted to reflect the copper patina of the terminal cladding, travel to-and-fro among the illuminated forms.
