“Beyond Notation”, a site-specific commission for Rowan University's Dance Department, is intended to evoke the expressive and performative nature of dance, using dance notation imagery. The two niches on either side of the entry to the south studio are filled with colorful multi part reliefs. Graphic shapes, derived from basic labanotation symbols and interpreted in bold colors, are arranged along traditional vertical “staffs”, on the back wall of each niche. The forms protrude more and more as they move up the staff to embody the rhythm of dance itself. This shift in dimension suggests the creative, spatial and historical aspects of dance, such as the transition from concept to realization, stillness to movement, and the recording of a dance sequence to the performing of it.
